Cherokee Village Resort

A Waterfront Lodge and Nature Center
at Lake Whitney

Nestled in the shade of a heavily wooded protected cove, Cherokee Village Resort displays a natural Lake Whitney atmosphere. As Central Texas' best kept secret, Lake Whitney has been officially recognized by its state legislature as the "Getaway Capital of Texas". Resembling a Texas Hill Country lake, without all the lake traffic, Lake Whitney's 23,500 surface acres of clear blue water and 225 miles of shoreline are sure to satisfy a broad variety of interests.

What's New at Cherokee Village Resort

Our newly rebuilt cabins and cottages are the perfect place to relax after an active day on the lake. Each offers a unique, home style décor and is equipped with powerful air-conditioning, quality bedding for your sleeping comfort, televisions with game ports, and wi-fi capability. Every cabin and cottage has a fully equipped kitchen which includes a refrigerator, coffeepot, microwave, and stove with oven.

In recent years, Cherokee Village Resorts has made considerable improvements in landscaping with native vegetation that attracts and sustains native wildlife. It has incorporated into the landscape natural safe havens with food and watering stations that provide protection from predators. In recognition of this effort, Cherokee Village Resorts has been recognized by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as a Texas Wildscape.

Cherokee Village Resort's northeast lakeside location means easy access from the I-35 corridor. With less than a 2 hour drive from most DFW metroplex locations, under an hour from Waco and no more than 3 hours from Austin, Cherokee Village Resort provides a great central location for private getaways and reunions, retreats, and conferences. Our Reunion & Retreat packages accommodate small family reunions, large church retreats, and off-site company meetings - from 14 to 60 people. Boat rentals are available to overnight guests.

Cherokee Village Resort's natural terrain has been enhanced by incorporating habitat that attracts wildlife such as butterflies and birds. As a "guests only" secluded getaway, Cherokee Village Resort offers privacy without public distraction. Come and enjoy beautiful Lake Whitney's towering limestone bluffs, clear blue water and protected coves in cozy comfort, at one of the cabins or cottages at Cherokee Village Resort.

Nature Trails

Cherokee Village Resort
at Lake Whitney

As a certified "Texas Wildscape", Cherokee Village Resort and Nature Center accepts it's responsibility to both nurture the health of native plants and wildlife and to provide information on and identification of such treasures. Much of what we have done so far in these respects can be seen by utilizing the self-guided tour map provided to guests staying in our cabins.
While guests visit the points on the map they will find:
Plant Identification

Visiting the "Habitat" and "Wildscape" gardens on the map will bring you in contact with numerous species of native plants with name plates alongside them. Some labeled non-native species are also pointed out in the gardens.
Milkweed at Lake Whitney
Hummingbird at Lake Whitney
Wildlife Stations

Visiting the wildlife feed stations and finding a quiet place to sit is a great way for bird watchers and photographers to zoom in on one or more of several native bird species. If you are unfamiliar with their names, just refer to the picture identification chart in the area.
Butterflies

Several species are on the grounds from spring through fall. To locate as many species as possible, butterfly enthusiasts visit each garden and native land section of the resort as shown on the self-guided tour map. To sharpen your skills before heading out, take time to view the butterfly photos in the pavilion.
Swallowtail at Lake Whitney
Greenthread at Lake Whitney
Native Lands

Guests use the map to locate and walk through natural blue-stemmed fields complete with a mixture of native wildflowers such as Indian Blankets, Texas Star Daisy, Indian Paintbrush, Mexican Hats, Englemann's Daisy, Horsemint, White Thorny Poppy, Prairie Verbena, Blue Curls and Texas Bluebonnets.

Meet the Bynums

Cherokee Village Resort
at Lake Whitney

It’s like going to visit long-time friends who greet you with open arms and gracious hospitality. Those friends welcoming you are Marshall and Patsy Bynum, owners of Cherokee Village Resort and Nature Center. These native Texans receive you and your family and friends with warm friendliness. They are eager to share their enthusiasm for nature and the out-of-doors, and the comfort of their lodge. Both Patsy and Marshall grew up absorbing the beauty and adventure of nature. Growing up in east Texas, Marshall became a serious angler at an early age. Hunting with his father he further developed a zest for outdoors and conservation. He’s a real Texan! Patsy grew up fishing, too. She was on the Gulf Coast, catching crabs and salt water fish near Galveston. Marshall and Patsy were children of nature, and they carry that passion into their adult life.

Raising three sons, working in corporate America, and loving nature filled their adult lives. Marshall was in aerospace engineering, and Patsy worked in the airline industry. While earning a living, they yearned for the beauty and peace of nature. To regenerate and recharge their corporate-weary souls, they often took their sons and dragged their boat to various Texas lakes. Adventure filled their weekends. Lake Whitney was their favorite get-away spot. The lake was close to the Metroplex, which meant less driving and more time for fun. It had deep, clear water from the Brazos River. The water temperature was also cooler than other Texas lakes, which sometimes felt like a bathtub in the summer. “We loved the massive limestone cliffs and numerous nooks and covey holes to anchor and enjoy,” says Patsy.
After years of being visitors to Lake Whitney, Marshall and Patsy had the opportunity to jump into lake life with all four feet. They purchased Cherokee Lodge, rebuilt it, and made it their way of life. They said good-bye to stressful traffic and corporate demands. Their children pitched-in and helped develop Cherokee Village into a rural renovation project. In addition to updating and modernizing the cabins and village houses, they enhanced the gardens and encouraged native plants. They planted wildflowers, built habitat and native wildscape gardens to attract birds and critters. The Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife designated the resort as a Texas Wildscape. Word is spreading about Cherokee Village.

“As people begin to learn about us, we attract more visitors and families who share our love of the outdoors,” says Patsy. “Family Reunions have become a major portion of our business. We continue to grow and add more features that attract naturalists.”

“As our grandson states: ‘Our lodge was built by our family to share with your family' ” says Marshall.
